Confetti cannons
  • Activation: Activated by twisting the base of a canister. This releases a spring-loaded or compressed air mechanism.
  • Contents: Shoot a shower of paper or metallic confetti and streamers.
  • Customization: Often feature varied sizes, from small handheld poppers to larger versions that create a more dramatic effect.
  • Safety: Compressed air versions are generally safer than pyrotechnic types and are recommended for indoor use.
A party popper is a handheld novelty pyrotechnic device that makes a loud pop and expels confetti or streamers when a string is pulled. It is used for celebrations like birthdays, weddings, graduations, and New Year’s Eve.
There are two main ways to use a party popper, depending on the type you have. The method will involve either pulling a string or twisting the bottom of the device.
For a string-activated popper
  1. Grip the popper. Hold the main tube of the party popper firmly in one hand.
  2. Point safely. Aim the open end of the popper up and away from your face, other people, animals, and flammable objects.
  3. Pull the string. Use your other hand to pull the dangling string at the bottom with a sharp, firm tug.
  4. Enjoy the effect! The popper will release a loud pop, and confetti or streamers will launch into the air.
For a spring-loaded or confetti cannon popper
  1. Hold the base. Grab the base of the party popper, which is typically a shorter tube or handle, with one hand.
  2. Point safely. As with the string version, aim the top of the cannon upward, away from people, pets, and anything delicate.
  3. Twist the base. With your other hand, firmly twist the base in the direction indicated by the arrows (usually in opposite directions).
  4. Watch the confetti fly! The pressure from the twisting motion will cause the spring to release, and the confetti will shoot out.
Safety tips
  • Always point away from faces and eyes. Party poppers can cause serious eye injuries if aimed directly at a person.
  • Supervise children. Never let young children use party poppers without adult supervision.
  • Use indoors or out. Spring-loaded poppers are safe for both indoor and outdoor use. The pyrotechnic string versions, while generally considered indoor fireworks, should still be used with care near flammable items.
  • Handle duds carefully. If a popper fails to go off, do not try to disassemble or fix it. The safest way to dispose of it is to soak it in water for at least 48 hours.
